박사 조주빈과 갓갓 문형욱의 나이가 이십 대 초중반이라는 점, 초범이라는 점, 대한민국의 평범한 청년이라는 점 등을 들어 N번방 사건이 터진 시점을 봤을 때, 이는 음모론이며 이들 뒤에 거대한 범죄조직이 똬리를 틀고 있다는 분석이 앞다투어 나왔다. 대한민국은, 평범해보이는 이십 대 심지어 십 대들이 미성년자를 잔혹하게 착취하고 이득을 취했다는 사실을 쉬이 받아들이지 못한 것이다. 언론은 가해자의 나이나 어린시절 등을 조명하며 가해자 서사를 만들기 바빴고, 법원은 초범 디지털 성범죄자에게 1년 6개월 형을 선고하는 기존 법률에 입각해 판결했다.
